Seminar: Security of Software Defined Networking

Beitrag von Fraunhofer SIT BB »

The SIT Research Group at the Technische Universität Darmstadt, Department of Computer Science, targets research in the broad area of security and privacy in information technology, in particular:
  • Security and Privacy in Cloud Computing
  • Secure Engineering
  • Privacy and Identity Management
  • Cryptography and Cryptographic Protocols
We are closely affiliated with CASED and Fraunhofer SIT.

Motivation & Goal
Controlling and managing networks using proprietary networking devices like switches and routers are time-consuming and cumbersome. For keeping the increased complexity manageable, Software Defined Networking (SDN) has been developed which decouples the control plane of the devices from the data plane by utilizing the principles of “abstraction” and “modularity”. Towards this, several SDN tools and architectures have already been developed. The aim of this seminar is to analyze them for identifying the security threats (e.g., Spoofing, Tampering, Repudiation, Information disclosure, Denial of Service, Elevation of privilege) by using a pre-defined methodology.

In this seminar, the students will learn to
  • follow a research methodology
  • write their findings (max. 8 pages using IEEE template)
  • make a presentation (20 min) and initiate a discussion (10 min)
  • work independently (analyze a tool)
  • exchange and discuss their findings
